The Mona Bismarck Foundation presents, The Romantic Spirit
of Frank Lloyd Wright: an exhibition of eighty altered emulsion
print photographs with mixed media by Carol Bishop. These
images recreate relationships between human design and nature
through images of selected Frank Lloyd Wright buildings.
Frank Lloyd Wright was one of America’s greatest
architects. His designs embraced the ideas of Romanticism,
a European philosophy based on concepts of democracy, utopia,
and whose artists and writers looked to nature for inspiration.
From the writings of J. J. Rousseau through the work of artists
and writers of the 19th century, independent thinkers searched
to find ways to capture the structures and feelings present in
the vast energy of nature. French Art Nouveau and The Arts and
Crafts movement paved the way for a new generation of designers
and craftspeople who came to influence the New World.
Wright is the most recognizable American Architect in the world.
His buildings capture “Romanza”, the energy
of the independent thinker and the determination to design structures.
These particular images, altered photo emulsions capture his vision.
Carol Bishop is an artist/photographer whose work centers
on issues of architecture. She’s created over a
dozen art exhibitions on Frank Lloyd Wright in America and Europe
including shows at Taliesen III and Taliesen West.
Ms. Bishop, Ph. D., is a Senior Lecturer at Woodbury University,
Los Angeles.
Celebrating its twentieth anniversary, the Mona Bismarck
Foundation, created by the late American philanthropist
Countess Mona Bismarck, promotes artistic, literary, scientific
and educational activities, particularly those which further Franco-American
friendship.
An American foundation, registered in the State of New York,
the Mona Bismarck Foundation supports, as its main programmatic
activity, a Paris Cultural Center in the Countess’ former
townhouse overlooking the Eiffel Tower. Since 1986, the
Foundation has organized over sixty exhibitions free to the public.
The Center also houses a library dedicated to the study of American
history and culture and provides office and conference space for
a select number of non-profit Franco-American associations such
as The American Club of Paris, the Association of Americans Resident
Overseas, the French Heritage Society, the American Overseas Memorial
Day Association, and the Lafayette Escadrille Memorial Foundation.
This combination of activities has made the Mona Bismarck Foundation
a centerpiece of cultural and scholarly exchange between the European
and American continents.
