In the context of Black History Month, The Big Funk Company presents their new play, freely inspired by the autobiographical novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou and directed by Eric Bouvron. Maya – Une voix, une voie tells the story of a little girl who loses her voice after a traumatic experience, finds it again and goes on to inspire people around the world. Writer, poet and civil rights activist who fought aside Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X during the American Civil Rights Movement, Maya Angelou is considered as an emblematic voice for women and minorities throughout the world. The play honors her deep involvement with music and pays homage to African American culture by incorporating everything from the sounds of spirituals and blues in the cotton fields to gospel, Saint Louis cabaret Jazz and Civil Rights songs of the 60s.
