Bernstein’s Candide bridges the gap between American musicals and opera to create a new era where Broadway becomes the center of the avant-garde of American creativity. Lilian Hellman’s original lyrics are based on Voltaire’s satirical 1758 novella. The operetta has gained tremendous popularity from the 1950s to the present, undergoing numerous rewritings and performances on the world’s greatest stages (New York, London, Milan, Paris). Following a week-long masterclass, David Stern’s Opera Fuoco presents an evening of music from Candide with performances by young vocalists.
